Water damage has temporarily shuttered the Esquire Theatre, and it is unclear when it will reopen, says a spokesman for Landmark Theatres, the largest theater chain in the U.S., which owns a number of small outposts in Denver, including the Esquire and the Mayan.
“We’ve had a utility problem including a bit of water damage. We hope to re-open soon,” the Landmark spokesman says in an email. Mary Queen of Scots, the only film that was scheduled to show at the Esquire, has been moved to the Mayan.
Opened in 1927 in Capitol Hill as the Hiawatha Theatre, the Esquire has been managed by Landmark since 1980. The two-screen theater mostly shows independent and foreign-language films.
