Perhaps it’s the “fantastic awfulness of Vegas” that makes it a fitting place for two strangers — a famous motivational speaker and a tollbooth collector — to kill themselves…together. That’s how the action goes down in Suicide(s) in Vegas, which opens tonight at Spark Theater.

“With its seductiveness, spontaneity and danger, Vegas is an interesting setting,” notes director, producer and leading lady Margaret Whittum. Also interesting: the anonymity of the Internet, which “offers a connection that can be powerful and freeing,” notes Whittum, a Colorado native who in 2011 commissioned U.K.-based playwright Evan Placey to create the work for the Canadian Fringe Theatre circuit, where it was nominated for Best English Production.

The hourlong dark comedy chronicles the tales of two women — both considering suicide but afraid to go it alone — who meet online. “It’s a dark theme,” Whittum says. “There’s nothing tongue-in-cheek about these women’s desires, yet some of the circumstances that got them to this point are hilarious.”

Whittum’s MW Productions brings Suicide(s) in Vegas to town for a weekend-only debut. Grab a seat at the intimate Spark Theater, 985 Santa Fe Drive, today at 4 p.m. or tomorrow at 4 or 6 p.m. Tickets, $10, are available at sparktheater.org or on a cash-only basis at the door.
Sat., Aug. 10, 4 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 11, 4 & 6 p.m., 2013
