“The idea for the show was really founded out of anger,” says Todd Barnes, aka Tina LeGrand. “I had some issues with men not wanting to date me because I’m a female impersonator. I was going to make a point that no matter if I did drag or not, I was still a man.” From that small, bitter seed grew Tina LeGrand’s Life as a Fabulous Disappointment. “I wanted people to take the journey with me that was my past but come to the same conclusions that I’ve come to mentally and emotionally and spiritually,” says Barnes.
Stringing together sixteen songs with transitional improvisation, the show is essentially a collection of memoir-like short stories that takes on everything from love to sexuality, disappointment to acceptance. “That all sounds very serious,” says Barnes, “but the show takes a really humorous turn. Sometimes it’s really inappropriate and sometimes it’s really sentimental. I just want people to realize that you can choose to live within the disappointment or you can focus on the qualities that make you good.”
Tina LeGrand plays tonight only at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, 1601 Arapahoe Street; tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. For more information, go to www.fabulousdisappointment.com or call 303-293-0075.
