CORE New Art Space, which hangs open-entry shows quarterly, decided to turn this summer’s into an unofficial Biennial offering. Juried by Ken Hamel of Denverarts.org and curated by CORE member Mark Penner Howell, the resulting show, Locally Grown, puts the open-minded CORE stamp on a showcase of largely unaffiliated local talent.
“Our thought was to do a show that gave some of the emerging artists a venue when they might not otherwise have one and says ‘Here’s our vibrant local scene,’” Howell says. “This is not a handpicked or themed group; this is just meant to be an open overview of the best of the emerging scene. We felt like there was a niche for this not being filled during the Biennial, and that the CORE venue was an appropriate place to do it.” And, he adds, though one never knows exactly what will come in during an open call, Hamel represents “someone with an eye toward what the best of the emerging scene would be.”
