You all have one lurking in a drawer somewhere, girls: a nasty tangle of broken and knotted gold chains, mateless earrings with twisted posts and, I dunno, something made of shiny metal that might have once come out of a bubblegum machine. And you can part with this stuff, believe it or not, as long as you simply chant this mantra over and over again: “Wear no more, I’ll wear this no more…” Because, dears, it’s true. You will never, ever sit down with tweezers and a magnifying glass to fix one little link of all that jewelry junk. Done. Kaput.
Now here’s what to do with it: Put it in a baggy and head over to the Irish Snug, 1201 E. Colfax Avenue, at noon on Saturday, May 17, where your derelict loot will embark on a new journey, thanks to a new local project called Gold Minds. They’ll be hosting a donation party at the Snug until 4 p.m., with plans to recycle their collected spoils through an ecologically responsible company called greenKarat. And what does greenKarat do? They melt everything down to make new jewelry, which they sell online, but not before donating 80 percent of the metals’ market value to the Gold Minds cause. Which happens to be raising funding for leader training, books and materials for the Junior Great Books program.
Now, that’s an idea worth its weight in gold. Literally. Admission is a $10 cash donation; for information go to www.goldforbooks.org.
