Named for some of the most pleasant weather on the Western Slope, Banana Belt Days in Buena Vista kicks off this morning with an invitation to experience what the town has to offer, even in the colder months. “We’re typically a summer tourist town, but we have some wonderful winter activities and great weather in the winter,” says Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce executive director Judy Hassell.

The day will start with a 5K foot race around the area (registration is at 8:30 a.m.); visitors are also encouraged to bring their own snowshoes, skis, hiking boots and bikes for a day of guided trail hikes and mild-temperature fun. In addition, the Buena Vista Snowmobile Club will run tours, and local experts will be on hand to give ice-fishing pointers. A poker run will be part of the day’s festivities, with cards being given out at each activity and a chance to win prizes in the evening.

There is a fee for select activities, and equipment and bicycles will be available to rent if needed. For lodging discounts and other information, call 719-395-6612 or go to buenavistacolorado.org. Banana Belt Days will be back on February 22 and again on March 15.
