Things are already shaking for Sexpot Comedy in 2015, with a new video series ready to premiere, a slate of shows both big and small in the works, and a move toward having more of those shows at 3 Kings Tavern. But first, the minds behind Sexpot decided it was high time that awards were handed out to the best of the best in Denver’s close-knit scene in 2014; hence, the first-ever Denver Comedy Awards — to be handed out tonight at 3 Kings in a local-comedy love fest — were conceived.

“There are so many committed, talented comics, web-content creators, writers, volunteers and fans in the city of Denver, and it just seemed like a chance to celebrate those people,” says Sexpot’s Andy Juett. “The whole event is free, and 3 Kings Tavern seemed like a natural place to throw a big party where people could be loose and have a lighthearted appreciation of the past year in comedy. People have worked really hard. Awards just seemed like a celebration that could be structured in a way that presenters can get laughs in another format.” The winners are all based on online public voting, he adds, and donations will also be collected for ailing Denver comic and cancer patient Deacon Gray. “Gray has just hit a bump in the road with some medical issues, so we’re looking forward to trying to raise some dough for him, too,” Juett says. “Health care is still a hefty bill. The great thing is, his type of cancer is treatable.” One more thing: The event is also a special showcase for comedian Kristin Rand, a headliner who is leaving town for L.A. soon.

The Denver Comedy Awards get under way tonight at 8 p.m. at 3 Kings, 60 South Broadway. Find more information at sex-pot.comedy.com/awards.
