Fever Dream Vintage Brightens Up Colfax With New Mural

No doubt, there's a lot of dark news about Colfax Avenue these days. But a bright spot just debuted on the corner of the 'fax and Fillmore, and we're here for it. A new mural now illuminates the Fillmore-facing wall of Fever Dream Vintage & Modern, which won a 2025 Best of Denver for Best Vintage Clothing Store for Trinkets.

"I love it," says Veronica Desangles, who founded the funky shop at 1506 Fillmore in 2022 and marked three years in business by taking over the neighboring space at 2903 East Colfax Avenue to expand the shop. "It was very random. [The artist] just came in one day. She had looked up cool shops and stuff and thought that my wall would be a good choice. Luckily, my landlord's really open to that kind of thing and he was all for it."

The artist is Zuzu Perkal, a Californian-turned-Austinite who's on the second voyage of a border-crossing, mural-painting odyssey that she's dubbed "Spraycation." The tour is taking Perkal (and dog Storm) on a five-city, painting-at-least-five-murals voyage in a colorful 30-foot-long, 2007 Four Winds Majestic RV dubbed "Aquaburn." The vehicle was gifted to her via a deceased friend who'd been part of Perkal's Burning Man Camp, and encountered a few ... issues ... on the first tour.

"Last year, I saw a mechanic in every single city I stopped at and many in between," she admits. "I got two very expensive tows last year — it was a mechanical nightmare. It's now running very smoothly, and I think all of that was just part of the process. I think the beauty of living on the road and doing Spraycation is that I am very in the flow of the universe. And honestly, I've made many, many wonderful mechanic friends."
The purplelicious mural, which Perkal painted for free, bears the message "You Are Magic." It debuted Wednesday, July 16, at a raucous party that included pop-ups by local artists, a live DJ set by Miss Flowers and 30 percent off everything in the store.

"I really hope it draws more people that drive down Fillmore," says Desangles. "When I was back there, no one really knew I was back there. Even now that I've expanded, I get a lot of people walking by that were like, 'Oh, my God, I live in this neighborhood. I didn't know you existed.' And I'm like, 'I've been here three years.' I'm just really happy to be a part of the community, and I'm glad the community has been so receptive. It's been a lot of fun. I can sense that the neighborhood is blooming. And it's just a really cool piece of artwork for the neighborhood. She did a great job."
