The Denver Roller Dolls are looking to break some hearts at the end of this season, when theyll host the 2011 Womens Flat Track Derby Associations national championships on their home turf for the first time and attempt to wrest the national title from their local rivals, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. Theyre warming up for the season at 7 p.m. tonight with a
Valentines Mix-Up bout at the 1ST BANK Center, with members of DRD teams the Bad Apples, Green Barrettes, Shotgun Betties and (new this year) Electrocuties all mixed up and skating against each other as the Heartbreakers, Love Takers and Dream Makers.
Weve gone from 26 skaters in 2005 to over 100 skaters in 2011, so weve had to shake things up, explains DRD spokeswoman Lexie White, aka Faye Tall Blonde. We have so many strong skaters that we had to add another team this year, and now weve got our junior league going strong, too. Theres a lot of love for roller derby in Denver, so we wanted to do something fun to open the season. This bout is like a Valentine to all our fans.
