Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who spoke up for education, was subsequently shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012. But she survived and went right back to fighting for her beliefs. Now living in Britain, Yousafzai has become a heroine and spokeswoman for women’s rights — at the age of sixteen. Her actions inspired Malala: Poems for Malala Yousafzai, a new anthology from FutureCycle Press; tonight, several local contributors, including Arapahoe Community College professor Kathryn Winograd, will read their works during Poems for Malala, a Writers Studio at ACC event promoting the book.

“We have some wonderful poets from Colorado included in the anthology,” Winograd says. “We thought, why not give voice to these poets, these poems, this girl and all the other young girls who haven’t been given the opportunity to have a voice?”

The free reading begins at 6 p.m. in the Colorado Gallery of Arts at Arapahoe Community College, 5900 South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton. Winners of a high-school poetry contest will also share work inspired by Malala. All proceeds from sales of the anthology will go to the Malala Fund, which is dedicated to making the dream of schooling for everyone a reality.
