Rock the Boat

This year's wet winter and spring means that more than just backyard weeds are on a rampage. River levels are up, too, so it's a better time than ever to check out — or sign up for — the freestyle kayaking fun today and next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the 5th Annual Golden Community Rodeo Series. "This is the first average year for water we've had in the past few years," says rodeo spokesman Ryan Graff. "You might see more excitement than past years." Whether it's your first or fortieth time in a boat, the water at the Clear Creek Whitewater Park, at 1201 Tenth Street, Golden, is perfect for today's kayak clinic, boater-cross race and on-the-river disco costume contest. If watching from the shore is your thing, Graff promises the pros will show you "things you never realized you could do in a kayak." Just be warned: With the river nice and swollen, you still may get wet. For more info, go to www.myspace.com/goldencommunityrodeo03.
Wednesdays, 4 p.m. Starts: May 30. Continues through June 20
