This year's sale features six tree varieties: three ornamental shade trees, the Aristocrat Pear, Norwegian Sunset Maple and Robinson Crabapple, and three fruit trees, the Golden Delicious Apple, Toka Plum and Montmorency Cherry.
"We work really hard to select trees that do well in our urban environment and also in our climate," says Kim Yuan-Farrell, program manager for the non-profit Park People, which hosts the event. The trees cost $45 for bare root stock and $65 for container and balled-and-burlapped trees.
And while those trees must be planted on private property, all Denver homeowners are also eligible this year for free street trees, as long as they pass a site inspection. These trees must be planted in the public right-of-way or within ten feet of the curb. Residents can submit a wait-list application at www.theparkpeople.org.
The sale runs from 9 a.m. to noon at two locations: Sloan's Lake (enter on West Byron Place between Wolff Street and Winona Court) and the City Park Greenhouse (2500 East 23rd Avenue). If there are leftover trees, an additional sale will be held tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon at the City Park Greenhouse. For more information, visit the website or call 303-722-6262.
