With the ongoing Big Bleu Cow 5 Comedy Variety Contest, you never know what you’re going to get. Every week, five acts compete, ranging from improv and standup to sketch comedy. One guy in costume claimed to have traveled through time from the 1800s to field audience questions. He didn’t win, but the competition’s coordinator, Jake Sharon, says a lot of acts kill but don’t move on to the semi-finals. There’s even a dance group coming up. “I don’t even know what that’s going to be like,” Sharon says.

Big Bleu used to be a summer variety show run by Michelle Miracle until she sought her fortunes in L.A.; that’s when Sharon took the reins. “I didn’t want to see it go,” he says of the program, which he revived as a talent contest. The crowds have been so good that after the winners claim their $250 prize and bragging rights in January, he’d like to keep it going. “There are so many surprisingly impressive acts,” he says.

In fact, the headliners for tonight’s show were discovered when they competed in this year’s contest. “Since the headliner doesn’t really affect the contest results, I’ve given a couple of slots to two of the acts who were really funny, regardless of how they did in the contest,” Sharon says.

With mystery meat, it’s best not to know.

Admission is $5; the show takes place at midnight every Saturday at the Bovine Metropolis Theater, 1527 Champa Street. Visit www.bovinemetropolis.com or call 303-758-4722.
Saturdays, 11:55 p.m.; Mondays. Starts: Oct. 4. Continues through Jan. 19, 2008
