Number 49: Adobada gordita from Tacos Y Salsas
Our go-to Tacos Y Salsas, on that strip of Federal Boulevard paved with mobile taco trucks and taquerias, is the kind of bright-colored (canary yellow), slightly seedy, fluorescently-lit, stridently loud and magnificently good Mexican pit stop that every neighborhood wishes would take the place of the loser food hut on the corner.
The salsa bar, even when it’s messy, which is often, deserves its own Facebook fan page. The counter seats wobble and teeter, just as they should, and the menu, studded with street tacos, Mexican breakfasts of chorizo and eggs, smothered burritos, delicious al pastor and piña quesadillas swollen with cheese, is exactly what you’d expect from an honest-to-Jesús Mexican joint. But it’s the gordita, a shell of masa stuffed with melted white cheese, guacamole, usually lettuce (but not today) and intensely-flavored carne adobada, the nubs of crisp-edged, marinated pork dyed vividly orange with powerful chiles, that makes us hope that this is what they serve in heaven.
