In a cute neighborhood with a perky name like Sunnyside, what could be more appropriate than a breakfast and lunch eatery so small you have to order from a walk-up window? Owner Harriett Sanchez might be willing to let you inside if she didn’t need every inch of space inside the little cottage kitchen to whip up green chile, gumbo, red beans and rice and other Mexican and Cajun specialties. Instead, head over when it’s sunny and grab a breakfast burrito on the patio — or go in any weather for that matter and take your burrito to go.

For the best breakfast burrito combo, go with the chorizo, potato and egg. The green chile is smooth and rich, with a warm heat perfect for easing into the day. Fresh scrambled eggs and soft potatoes complement the chorizo sausage, made from scratch by Sanchez’s husband. And if you call a day ahead, you can land a stack of fresh flour tortillas that Sanchez makes herself.

Some breakfast burritos rely on grease to up the flavor (which isn’t a bad thing, on occasion), but Chickee’s burrito is more country than city, with wholesome and satisfying ingredients without the film of oil on the chile or bright orange drippings from the sausage. For a burrito as big as your forearm, it’s filling without being heavy.

Sanchez keeps her Cajun and Mexican recipes separate, except for a weekend special of smothered burritos stuffed with house-made boudin. You can hold out for Saturday to score one of these, but Chickee’s chorizo is available every day (except Monday, when the walk-up window is closed).
