Number 32: Torta ahogada from Las Tortas
Is it possible to love a sandwich more than your pet iguana? What about your dog? Your kid? If the sandwich in question is the torta ahogada from Las Tortas, a small storefront on Leetsdale that does tortas — and nothing but tortas — than the answer to that question might grant you unlimited freedom from all of your responsibilities.
The joint’s indomitable torta ahogada, the emperor of Mexican street food, isn’t just another bite-and-chew sandwich that you gingerly pick up with your hands and mindlessly shove down your gullet. No, the torta ahogada, a fiendishly large beast of a crusty roll that’s split, paved with refried beans, stuffed with crisp-edged carnitas and flooded with a tomato sauce stung with chiles and propagated with pickled onions, is a conquest for the mighty. Forgo the plastic knives and forks, which will only snap, and grasp the brute by your hands, lifting it up to the clenches of your jaw, stopping only to dab the sweat from your brow. And then promise yourself that you’ll never step foot in a Subway again.
