Low-cal this, low-cal that: Even 7-Eleven’s Slurpees are now getting thinner, with a new line Slurpee Lite Fanta Sugar-Free Mango made with Splenda that boasts just half the calories of an original Slurpee.
I’m not a regular Slurpee drinker; I’m a little wary of anything that’s the same color as laser beams in movies. Still, I wanted to try this frozen concoction for myself, so I stopped in at the 7-Eleven at 1975 East Colfax Avenue.
Sure enough, this spot had the new Slurpee Lite Fanta Mango, as well as Coke, piña colada and Fanta grape and banana flavors. I grabbed a kiddie cup and splurted the frozen, neon-orange gloop into the cup, poked in a stroon (straw with spoon) and took a few pulls.
It needed a bit more mango — it tasted more like a frozen diet orange soda, complete with that weird dry-mouth after-effect you get with sugar substitutes. But it wasn’t terrible. I suppose if you were dieting and still really wanted a f*cking Slurpee, this would be a viable option. (The new drinks are ostensibly targeting women in their early twenties, since I suppose diabetics aren’t a particularly sexy demographic.)

Help us continue giving back to Denver.
7-Eleven is so proud of these new offerings that they made their debut in time for Free Slurpee Day, which will be Wednesday, May 23. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., anyone who visits a 7-Eleven can get a 7.11 ounce Slurpee — sorry, greedy bastards, just one. But at least this gives you an opportunity to try out the new low-cal version without having to spend any money — so if you end up hating it, you are only out the time it took to take a sip or two.
And if you love it, mark your calendar: 7-Eleven will be introducing more new low-cal flavors: strawberry-banana in July and cherry-limeade in August.
