Breckenridge Brewing doesn’t always release limited-edition, barrel-aged beers, but when it does, there’s a big to-do about it, complete with a party.

On Saturday, the brewery, located at 471 Kalamath Street, will offer 240 hand-numbered 750 ml bottles of Summer Cab Ride, Breck’s Summerbright golden ale aged in cabernet sauvignon wine barrels. The bottles, which will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis, beginning at 1 p.m., cost $20 each and there is a two bottle per person limit.

But the party will start at 11 a.m. (place-holding numbers will be given out to people who arrive for the sale) with live music by Stephen Marcus, tastings of Breckenridge Brewery rare beers (like an oak-aged Porter, PeachFork Wheat, and a 2011 Christmas Ale) and a grand prize drawing for a fifteen-person, two-hour tour on the Denver Patio Ride.

Breckenridge released its most recent limited-edition beer, called Twenty, last April to celebrate its twentieth anniversary. That beer was a strong Scottish ale aged five months in Stranahan’s whiskey barrels; only 180 bottles were available.

“We just do a couple of these a year,” says Breckenridge brewery director and brewmaster Todd Usry. “It’s fun for the customers; they love getting their hands on one of 240 bottles. Last time, people were here at 6 a.m. and we didn’t open until 10 a.m. There were people with blankets and folding chairs.”

The beers also offer Breck’s brewers a chance to try something new and to break up the grind of doing the same beers over and over again, he adds.
