Venice oozes romance, with its picturesque canals, meandering gondola rides and the chiming bells of St. Mark’s Square. But it’s also a very long, expensive transatlantic trip away. So instead of making the voyage, try sweeping your lover off his or her feet with the Peach Bellini at Maggiano’s Little Italy. The Bellini was invented at the famed Harry’s Bar in Venice, back in 1948. Maggiano’s serves a slightly updated version made with Champagne, peach nectar and vodka, blended with ice. The drink ($5.95) served in a wineglass garnished with a cherry — and sipping those bubbles through a straw all but guarantees a serious case of the giggles. Although Maggiano’s may not be the first place you think of when you’re in the mood for a romantic dinner –it’s hard to concentrate on amore when you’re gobbling down a gigantic, family-style serving of spaghetti and meatballs — the corner booths, complete with red-checked tablecloths, are conducive to snuggling. Keep sipping, settle back, and watch the nightly hustle and bustle, all the while stealing kisses sweet enough to match this peach slushie. As the Italians say, Quando in Roma, fa come il Romano fa.
