In swank locales around the world, it’s common to see distinguished-looking older gentlemen escorting young, buxom blondes. And high in the hills of Aspen last weekend, I found myself a benefactor that took great care of me: the Aspen Sugar Daddy. A specialty at the affluent, Western-style Range, this sweet suitor is made with equal parts Finlandia Vodka, Amarula Cream, Cointreau, a splash of fresh-squeezed lime juice and POM Wonderful pomegranate concentrate, then served up in a martini glass with a pomegranate-sugar rim. The Aspen Sugar Daddy ($8) was recently crowned Aspen’s official drink for the upcoming season — and I was happy to be its tipsy queen for an evening. The Graze Cafe, a cozy space upstairs at Range, is the perfect place to pick up — a cocktail, that is, and the Pomegranate Margarita is another royal treat. Golddiggers and ski bums alike can easily afford Range’s happy hour, daily from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and all night Wednesdays, when all specialty drinks are half price and hearty apps like buffalo skewers and lamb quesadillas are only $2.50. It’s still fall in Denver, but Colorado’s highest peaks are already dusted with white powder, ladies — and those Elans and mink stoles aren’t going to buy themselves.
