It’s sometimes hard to tell which 16th Street Mall food carts have vanished for good and which are just taking an extended break, but after a craving for golden pastries stuffed with vegetables and meat — the most authentic Argentine empanadas in the city — gave way to a fruitless two-week search for Empanadas Argentinas on its old corner at 16th and Stout, we began to fear the worst.
And this morning, we were dealt a crushing blow: the Downtown Denver Partnership confirmed that the cart is no longer a vendor on the mall. Mario Krauss, the Argentine native who opened the cart last year, has packed up his wares and moved on.
Tragic.
