I hate working out, and I hate people who say how much they love working out. To me, working out is a necessary evil — like taxes, dating and menstrual cycles. So when I heard there was a gym called the Anti-Gym, I got excited: I thought working out there would be nothing like working out. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. At the Anti-Gym, you have a trainer who makes sure you show up (one of my major challenges) and who works you out hard, three times a week, military style — with plenty of military belittling and berating for good measure. But I endure the abuse because when Matt, my trainer — who, fortuitously, is eye-candy extraordinaire — comments on my diet (yes, you have to confess what you eat), he says things like: “You know, I don’t advocate spitting out a perfectly good drink, but in this instance, I would. Hell, spit the shit out, then slam a shot of tequila. I’m not telling you not to get a buzz, just avoid refined sugars like the plague.” So when I heard that Tambien, the reincarnation of Sketch and the haughty Creeker version of Mezcal, had formed an unholy alliance with the Anti-Gym, I knew I had to get there. Fast. Although Tambien’s cocktail menu is brimming with interesting margarita/tequila concoctions, I went with the Especial Margarita ($6.75), which is Anti Gym-approved! The drink was the perfect balance of tart and sweet, made with Tequila 30-30 Blanco, agave nectar and fresh-squeezed lime juice. Since there’s no prepared margarita mix in it, it’s better for you — and it also won’t give you a sugar hangover (tequila yes, sugar no). Or you could just follow Matt’s advice and slam a shot of tequila. Tambien has 275 kinds, and trying them all is the kind of workout I can endorse.
