“I’m absolutely exhausted, and I want a bath,” declared Carla Stevens, co-owner of Giovanni’s Italian Cafe, at 3355 South Yarrow Street, when I caught her on the phone this afternoon.

As reported here last week, Stevens and her husband, Salvatore Giacalone, had hoped to unveil their new space on the same day as their son’s eleventh birthday — on Monday, June 1 –and while it was a push, they managed to get it done. “We were completely packed,” she told me. “The whole dining room was full and we had lines. It was just non-stop, but we couldn’t have asked for a better first day.”

And a long day. Giovanni’s is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, beginning at 6 a.m. (Breakfast, starting at $2.99 for French toast or pancakes, is a steal.) And soon you’ll be able to drink a mimosa with those pancakes; a liquor-license hearing is set for Thursday, June 25.
