Highlands Cork & Coffee could soon have a full bar.

The coffee shop-and-wine bar in Highlands Square had a liquor-license hearing last Thursday. Owner Shawn Manzanares says she thinks it went well, though she hasn’t heard yet whether the license was granted. If it is, customers will soon be able to enjoy martinis on the cafe’s year-round patio. And if it’s cold outside? Fear not. This spot has Snuggies on hand.

“We wash them regularly,” Manzanares assures us.

Highlands Cork & Coffee has been open for nearly four years — but not always under that name. Until about nine months ago, it was known as Cafe Caliente. “People thought we were a Mexican restaurant,” Manzanares explains. “We thought people would get what we really are if we changed the name.”

In addition to Snuggies, the cafe’s patio has a fire pit to keep drinkers warm. Those touches made Highlands Cork & Coffee the Highlands Mommies’ pick for the best patio in northwest Denver. And good luck to those who dare to dispute the Mommies!
