Aurora, which is already clotted with some of the city’s best ethnic joints, is about to welcome a new quick-service soul food spot. Kirk’s Soul Kitchen, which is slated to open on May 5, will dish up everything from fried chicken and meatloaf to collard greens and sweet potato pie.

The restaurant is dedicated to owner Jay Berry’s late step-father, Kirk, who, recalls Berry, “told me that his biggest goal in life was for our family to succeed, and he opened the door to the beginning. He always said to stay focused because you could do anything you put your mind to, and that, I will never forget.”

The space, which is still undergoing construction, will also sling gumbo (until it’s sold out), fried catfish, smothered pork chops, macaroni and cheese and red beans and rice. “Our recipes are straight from the South,” notes Berry on his website, adding that his menu is a “real taste of soul food.”

When the joint opens on May 5 at 11 a.m., Berry will offer a 10 percent discount throughout the day and free dessert for the first 100 customers.
