I’ve always loved the drinking aspect of sports. I think that half the reason I took up golf is that it’s officially the only “sport” that has cocktail waitresses (aka cart girls). My second favorite drinking sport is skiing. There’s nothing that compares to that first sip of a cocktail after hours of physical exertion, sweating and freezing. Jill’s Umbrella Bar is the perfect outdoor après-ski bar on a gorgeous winter day. It sits at the bottom of Copper Mountain’s Center Village, providing easy access after the last run of the day. Mingling comes easy at Jill’s, too, since ski clothes are the great equalizer: Everyone looks good with a lot of layers on. (Snow skiing isn’t like waterskiing, where only the rock-star bodies have a chance of making a good impression.) And Mike, our bartender, was clearly on a mission to make sure that everyone at Jill’s had as few inhibitions as possible so that those layers would come off easily after just a few drinks. He encouraged our future nakedness with his Mike’s Famous Tuaca Sunset ($7), made with Tuaca, Hornitos Tequila, Chambord, cranberry and pineapple juice. Ah, there’s no business like snow business.
