Blink — and you’ll miss it. Not that Frankie Gallegos is worried about anyone actually doing anything of the sort, despite the fact that Frankie’s Cheesesteaks and More, his new cheesesteak joint, which opened promptly at 3:30 p.m. last Friday, is about the size of a button mushroom.
Quite the contrary: According to Gallagos, who hails from El Paso, Texas, his namesake takeout and delivery hut, located at 2424 Larimer Street, might be small in stature, but the cheesesteaks, heaped with shaved ribeye, onions, Swiss and American cheeses, bell peppers and mushrooms, are allegedly huge. “We’re doing Philly cheesesteaks the Texas way, which means that they’re nice and big — very, very big,” promises Gallagos. “We’re not stingy with the meat; we pile it on,” all in effort, he says, to “be the best cheesesteak sandwich in Denver.”
In addition to those weighty cheesesteaks, Gallagos is also pimping hand-held breakfast burritos wet with either a vegetarian or pork-studded green chile, hot wings and pastrami sandwiches, which, insists Gallagos, are also the size of Texas. “They’re huge, huge, huge, huge,” he says, stretching his arms as far as they’ll reach, just to prove his point.
There’s no seating inside the store, but delivery is free within downtown. His hours are Monday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and he’ll be open on Sundays too, when the Colorado Rockies are slugging it out at Coors Field.
