Restaurant Roll Call: Every Opening and Closing in 2025

It was another busy year for the local food scene, as we sipped food-inspired martinis, tracked headline-making closures and got a first taste of some standout additions.

In 2024, a lot of headlines touted big challenges for local restaurants, and that held true in 2025 as well. Both operators and diners are under financial strain and, as of today, January 1, Denver’s minimum wage has increased again — from $18.81 to $19.29 per hour for untipped workers and from $15.79 to $16.27 per hour for tipped workers.

By the numbers, the scene is still growing. We reported 172 metro Denver closures in 2025 and 303 openings, including ten local brands that now have outposts at Denver International Airport. Here are our total reported numbers from the last three years:

2025: 303 openings, 172 closures
2024: 270 openings, 104 closures
2023: 298 openings, 130 closures

Note that these stats do show an uptick in spots that have shuttered, and the margin between openings and closures gets smaller when we break it down by the action in Denver proper, where we reported 181 openings and 120 closures in 2025.

As has been the trend in recent years, many operators are now choosing to open new ventures or expand to the suburbs where the minimum wage is lower, which is something we expect to continue in 2026.

Despite the industry struggles, chefs and operators are getting creative and continue to open new concepts — we’re excited about some of the eateries expected to debut this winter, most of which are in buzzy Denver neighborhoods like RiNo and Cherry Creek, though most are from familiar names.

We hope to see some fresh faces move to the forefront in 2026, with new ideas that fill gaps in the scene instead of more of the same. With that in mind, cheers to a new year of dining!
