Feeling a little under the weather this morning? How about a heaping helping of Mexican food? Gustavo Arellano, author of the weekly column “Ask a Mexican” as well as the book Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America, recently tackled a question about whether the Mexican diet is healthy. It once was, he replied, but not so much now that Mexicans are eating the “mainstream mierda that gabachos eat.” But there is one secret weapon, as Roy Romero points out:
White corn “posole,” tripe and pig’s feet or hocks, an onion, 5 cloves garlic, red chile powder, oregano, cook all night. Yes, menudo has real healing powers.
Have you tried menudo as a hangover cure? It’s a featured item on many Mexican menus on the weekend, and a favorite of devoted diners whether or not they tied one on the night before. As he ate his way up Federal Boulevard, Mark Antonation tried several versions, including the menudo at El Zarape and a “chock full of guts” version at Taqueria Mi Pueblo (shown above).
Where — and what — will you be eating this morning?
