A sagging economy isn’t keeping Smiling Moose Deli from winning itself some franchisee love. The local and organic ingredient-driven, Boulder-based sandwich chain, with a dozen locations throughout the state, is expanding not only throughout Colorado but pretty much in every direction save due west.
According to company president Kevin Sloane, the next Smiling Moose outpost to join the growing herd will be located at 1517 Wynkoop Street.
“We’ve been looking at the downtown area for quite a while, and finally a great opportunity came up with the developers of the building,” says Sloane, who hopes to open the Wynkoop Street location within the next seven weeks.
“It’s going to be a little more of an enhanced deli,” he adds. “We’re going to have salads made to order, like chopped salad, as well as espresso and cappuccinos, in addition to the traditional Smiling Moose Deli food.”

Then, in the next year, Sloane plans to have two more Colorado franchises up and running, one at 17th and Welton Streets, the other in Boulder. “It’s just a matter of timing,” Sloane predicts.
And wait, there’s more moose!
The chain also plans to open franchises in Wisconsin and Texas in the near future and is contemplating deals in Indiana and Montana as well as two more Colorado locations: Colorado Springs and Fort Collins.
“As the economy somewhat softens, we’re finding tons of franchise interest and growth interest,” Sloane says. “It’s just a matter of the credit markets and financing.”
