The harvest season for Texas Rio Star Grapefruit — a particularly red, juicy variety — is January and February, and to mark it, TexaSweet Citrus Marketing, Inc. and Taste of the South Magazine have created a grapefruit recipe challenge. As described on the contest website, you can enter in three categories — salad, entree or dessert — by February 15, with the winners (who’ll split $5,000) announced April 1.

February is National Grapefruit Month, along with American Heart Month, Sweet Potato Month and National Cherry Month (not to mention Black History Month), so I’m already working on my recipe for a grapefruit, cherry and sweet potato smoothie.
