Let Matt Mather guide you to a bottle of wine, and you’ll get more than a perfect gruner veltliner to match your first-course vegetable dish. The wine director at Boulder’s Frasca Food & Wine, 1738 Pearl Street, is so well-versed in his craft, he can give you a history lesson, a concise picture of the vineyard and a clear idea of what you’ll taste in a discourse that’s simultaneously poetic, enlightening and articulate.

It’s no surprise, then, that Mather was just named one of the country’s seven best new sommeliers by Wine & Spirits magazine.

The publication highlighted sommeliers across the country who were singled out by their peers for their devotion to their studies, their ability to craft a wine list and their strength at providing service in their restaurants.

In his interview with the magazine, Mather waxes nostalgic on getting into wine through Northern Rhone syrahs, emphasizes the importance of listening to a guest when choosing wine and calls out his peers as his best source of information.

The honor comes on the heels of Mather passing the service section of the rigorous master sommelier exam. He passed the theory portion last year and has only the tasting test left before he’s certified.

Mather will be back at Frasca when the restaurant reopens after its remodel, on October 27.
