Denver has long been a drinking town, so it's no surprise that it's overflowing with places where you can imbibe — and spilling over with choices for how to fill your glass. We spend all year scouring the scene for fresh additions and revisiting old favorites to create a list that includes a wide range of picks.

As always, our Top 100 Bars list serves up saloons old and new, low- and high-end, with options from all over the metro area. But this year, we've divided these spots into five categories.

Some are buzzy new bars, including a trio of watering holes that expertly combine upscale and down-home ambience, and another that's hidden in a basement-level space downtown where every drink is just $5.

There are also the classics, many of which are well-worn dives where you can score a cheap buzz while soaking in the kind of camaraderie that only develops over many years.

An expertly made cocktail can be a treat, and there are plenty of options for that, too, whether you're craving over-the-top tiki libations or standards like Negronis and Old Fashioneds done right.

One of our favorite types of bars, though, is the neighborhood watering hole, so we've included a smattering of those as well. And you can't talk drinking in the Mile High without a nod to the city's beloved craft beer (and cider) scene.

We hope you'll discover some new favorites — and plenty of good times — among these picks. Extra credit if you go all the way, as two local educators did in 2023, when they drank through the entire Top 100 list in a series of field trips.

Here are our current picks for the Top 100 bars in Denver:

New and Noteworthy Denver Bars

The top bars that opened between Labor Day 2023 and Labor Day 2024.

These new liquid assets range from an '80s-themed spot on South Broadway to the revamped version of longtime favorite Barry's and an Aurora cocktail spot that was named one of the best bars in America by Esquire

The Best Classic Denver Bars

Watering holes that have stood the test of time.

All of these saloons have been open for fifteen years or longer. Some much longer, like Charlie Brown's, which recently banned smoking on its enclosed patio for the first time in its 91-year run, and Don's Club Tavern, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2022

Denver Cocktail Bar Hot Spots

The bars that are mixing up the best boozy concoctions.

For years, beer was the main boozy draw in Denver. But these days, the city has some seriously talented cocktail pros. The scene really started to elevate with the opening of Williams & Graham in 2011, which was named one of the best bars in the world just three years later and continues to impress; so do newer additions like Yacht Club, which won Best U.S. cocktail bar at the 2024 Spirited Awards.

Neighborhood Bar Favorites in Denver

The comforting go-to's that always deliver a good time.

No matter where you live in the city, the best bar is often the one closest to you — the place you start to frequent because of proximity, but keep going back to for other reasons. Like the Devil's Drink, where you can indulge your dark side, or the women-owned Dew Drop Inn, where you can nab a patio seat and slurp up a bowl of mussels with your cocktail. Or Aspen Lodge in Westminster, where the charming and quirky owner is happy to chat about his love of Turkish food, Iron Maiden, Christmas decor (which stays up year-round) and the dozens of lava lamps that fill the space.

Each of these offers something different for regulars and first-timers alike.

Denver Beer and Cider Bar Destinations

The places to indulge your local craft cravings.

The Mile High is one of the best craft beer cities in the world. The sheer number of options is impressive, as is the quality being produced by the city's top breweries. These picks shine not only for their brews, but for their ambience and dedication to good times. The cider scene has been growing, too, and the cidery included here is a place that will change any misconceptions you might have about that beverage being just sweet, boozy apple juice.
