Saigon Terrace

This calm and unassuming little spot serves up some great dishes, using demonstrably fresh ingredients and well-constructed sauces. The fantastic food makes up for the stark interior — the egg rolls, for example, which are so often a throwaway dish, are truly excellent here, and don’t miss the soft-shell crab appetizer.

Sam Taylor’s Bar-B-Que

Sam Taylor’s does its barbecue wet — slathered in a thick, sticky, gloss-black sauce, a Tennessee-meets-Kansas City riff that packs both heat and sweet. The gigantic, slow-smoked pork ribs are excellent, as is the pork sandwich (or “poke sammich”); the homemade potato chips actually taste like potatoes, the brisket sandwich is decent, and the steam-table […]

Sam’s Bar & Lounge

Many of Denver’s longtime dives have been renovated into shiny shadows of their former selves, often transformed into hangouts for hipsters. We’re betting you won’t find a single hipster at Sam’s Bar & Lounge, a watering hole that opened on Leetsdale Drive 66 years ago. You won’t find any wi-fi, either; as one message on […]

Sam’s No. 3

The origins of Sam’s No. 3 date back to 1920, when Sam Armatas started offering his Coney Island favorites in Denver. Over the next nine decades, the empire grew and shrank and shrank still more, until it was down to just one Sam’s No. 3, located in Aurora. Currently, there are two locations, both with […]

Shanahan’s Steakhouse

Mike Shanahan may be long gone from Denver, but he left a major legacy with his namesake restaurant in the Denver Tech Center. Steakhouses are all about unabashed high-roller gluttony, and when you’re paying a head and a hoof for their beef, the cow had better damn well be worth the price of its hide. […]

Shotgun Willie’s

For three decades, Shotgun Willie’s was housed in an unflashy little building next to the Glendale Target parking lot, entertaining the masses as only Shotgun Willie’s can. But in 2013, the owners of the gentlemen’s club decided to replace the droopy old digs with firmer ones. Set back from the street, the new building is […]

Silvi’s Kitchen

The bakers at Izzio Artisan Bakery (formerly Udi’s) sell loaves of bread all over the Front Range, providing the staple for restaurants and filling home bread boxes via farmers’ markets and Whole Foods. And in Glendale, the bread’s available at Silvi’s Kitchen, a restaurant that occupies a vast corner spot in the CitySet development. Those […]

Slotted Spoon Meatball Eatery

Slotted Spoon Meatball Eatery, which opened in early 2013 in the University of Denver neighborhood, is a meatball-slinging version of Chipotle, the fast-casual chain that got its start just a few blocks away. And co-owners Alex Comisar, Johnny Coast and Jensen Cummings have come up with what looks like a winning concept with their colorful […]

Smashburger

Smashburger has all the affectations of a standard QSR operation: counter-ordering and tableside delivery, a fast and easily navigable menu, a simple and easily duplicated decor. But it also has a far-from-standard burger: the namesake “smashburger,” a half-pound of ground, nicely fatty Angus beef that’s whacked onto the hot steel, producing a flood of meat […]

Snooze

When Snooze first hit the Ballpark neighborhood in 2007, it revolutionized breakfast in Denver. The most important meal of the day became one of the most creative meals of the day, with flights of pancakes, re-imagined omelets and Benedicts, and a morning-themed alcoholic beverage list. Snooze nicely filled a niche that Denver hadn’t even recognized […]

Sojourners Coffee & Tea

Sojourners is the quintessential neighborhood coffee shop, a sneaky little spot tucked away in a strip mall in the Virginia Village neighborhood. Sojo’s, as it’s known by patrons, has walls adorned with local art, plentiful seating options and a true living-room feel that no chain can ever capture. Along with an assortment of specialty lattes […]
