Thieves broke into a Colorado State Patrol evidence lot in Arapahoe County earlier this month, stealing around 600 pounds of marijuana.

According to an announcement from the Colorado State Patrol that sounds like part of Super Troopers, highway patrol officers seized a trailer and its contents, which included the marijuana, as part of an ongoing "highway drug interdiction investigation." But during a property walkthrough on April 4, an evidence technician found a damaged gate at the facility's entrance, the announcement notes.

"Further investigation revealed that a secured trailer had also been broken into, and approximately 600 lbs. of marijuana that was scheduled to be destroyed was stolen from inside the trailer," reads an April 9 CSP bulletin.

It took almost three days before CSP officials noticed that seized weed had been taken. According to the announcement, the suspects first came to the evidence lot "after dark on the evening of April 1 and used a power tool to remove a lock on the gate and a lock on the secured trailer."

A report was filed with the Englewood Police Department, according to the CSP, which is also investigating the case; there is no active court case involving the stolen evidence.

The CSP announcement says that it has "completed an initial review that identified gaps in the evidence facility’s security processes" and increased security camera system checks and property walkthroughs to "identify security issues faster and ensure evidence integrity."

A "comprehensive internal investigation" is also underway to determine if evidence storage or security protocols were violated.

In a bulletin sent hours after the first, CSP said it is now requesting information on two vehicles that were "possibly traveling together" and potentially involved in the burglary. According to CSP, the vehicles are described as a "light-colored 1999-2005 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab and a white 2007 Honda CRV."

Anyone with information is asked to call CSP at 303-239-4501.
