Drawing comparisons to Portishead, Massive Attack and A Tribe Called Quest, the band creates a lush blend of hip-hop, acid jazz and atmosphere. Having turned their local scene on its ear, the members of PH Balance mix freestyle rapping and sung vocals with phat kick drums and soaring trumpets. Though the new CD, Fluent, has enjoyed a warm reception, live performance is the outfit’s strongest suit.
