New York City-based turntablist DJ Empress is considered royalty in the drum-and-bass realm. Her progressive song selection and refined ear for beats has earned her repeat invites to the illustrious V Recording’s “Movement” showcase in London, an accomplishment previously unheard of for an American DJ. Purifying her style while working as head record buyer for Satellite Records’ New York, Boston and Atlanta installations, Empress displayed an early knack for discovering what heats up the dance floors and knowing when a good thing is too much. She’s now able to reproduce her live fire in the studio — as evidenced by Stateside Sessions: Drum and Bass, Volume 2, her solo debut for Topaz Records, and “Hydroxy,” her single with the collective Triadd. Be empressed when the DJ treks into town on Thursday, July 31, at the Snake Pit.
