Some people have to have it all. Take singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root. As members of Slipknot, the two enjoyed worldwide success when their Des Moines, Iowa, bar band was transformed into a tour headliner seemingly overnight. But before they became masked metal mavens, they played together in another Iowa outfit called Stone Sour. Roughly two years ago, Taylor used a break from the ‘Knot to write songs with guitarist Josh Rand; the melodic but hard material they came up with inspired a resurrection of Stone Sour. Enlisting Root and original bandmates bassist Shawn Economaki and drummer Joel Ekman, the group released an eponymous debut on Roadrunner Records in 2002. Taylor, a onetime resident of Lakewood, is quoted on the band’s Web site as saying, “The difference this time around is that we lost the fear of trying to compete with what is popular. We are going to stay true to the type of music that we want to make, and no matter who likes it or not, I am still secure that we have produced a great album.” Apparently, the industry agrees: The single “Get Inside” was nominated for this year’s Best Metal Performance Grammy. Make sure you get inside when Stone Sour appears at the Fillmore Auditorium on Friday, May 2, with Powerman 5000 and RA.
