The wait is over: Summer Bedhead’s debut indie/alt album, The Body Needs a Break, is officially out everywhere as of August 2, and it demands your eyes and ears. Fronted by powerhouse vocalist and guitarist Summer Green, alongside bassist Jacob Burton, the band channels years of energy from Denver’s indie scene into a record packed with raw emotion, infectious hooks, and unforgettable storytelling.
Summer Bedhead, which formed in October 2021, draws sonic inspiration from the likes of Hippo Campus and Peach Pit, however the band has easily carved out a sound that’s unmistakably its own: dreamy, gritty and confessional all at once.
Green says this album is a story of self-growth: "In the beginning, the album has an attitude similar to my own, where I recognize issues and playfully shove them aside or undermine them, and then it grows into a darker and more serious tone as I truly reflect. the songs that break your heart are followed by songs that put you back together and celebrate the journey."
Listeners can hear this on such standout tracks as “Half-Assed” which truly hit hard with lines like: “I just wanna be loved / but I am too drained/ Won't give it away / I’ll settle for half-assed foreplay,” set against fuzzed-out guitars and head-knocking drums.
Additional tracks that garner more than one listen include the driving “Roll With It," in which soaring vocals meet lyrical depth: but the vision stings / eyes rolling back / there’s comfort in giving up / and strength in getting back on track.
It’s proof that Summer Bedhead wears the heart on the sleeve, and isn’t afraid to sing about the messiness of it all. This record showcases consistent vibrant vulnerability, and you can hear the songs in-person at the hi-dive on Thursday, August 7; Lu Lagoon and Keddjra are also on the bill. It's more than a show; it's a celebration of Denver's rising alt scene.
"I wrote this album in a very transitional and reflective point in my life. I lived in three different states in 2020-2021 bouncing between my college in LA, my home base in Michigan, and ultimately following my best friend to Denver," says Green. "There were a lot of risky and difficult choices I had to make that generated a profound sense of faith in myself after feeling fairly lost, and I think you can see that forming in this album."
Summer Bedhead, Thursday, August 7, hi-dive, 7 South Broadway. Tickets are $15.
