Danny Williamson — or LTJ Bukem, as he’s known in the dance world — is one of the few electronic musicians around who can lay legitimate claim to the distinction of being a true innovator. Having gotten his start in London’s hard-core breakbeat scene at the dawn of the ’90s, Bukem left behind the primitive aggression of jungle and singlehandedly crafted a sound that would become its own scene within a scene. The style came to be known as “intelligent drum-and-bass,” a much more melodic and musical interpretation of London’s frenetic jungle beat. With the establishment of two record labels, Good Looking and Looking Good Records, Bukem was able to showcase other talents experimenting with mellow and musical drum-and-bass. Venturing further into funky, jazzy, down-tempo territory, Bukem’s ever-evolving sound is still one of the most recognizable in all of electronic music. Catch its creator on Tuesday, September 27, at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom.
