Sacramento's Garrincha & the Stolen Elk has had a prolific year, with three releases in the last six months. Matt Kretzmann and Davy Bui have been involved in Sacto's noise scene outside of this project, with Kretzmann running the experimental music label Weird Forest. Garrincha is often reminiscent of the sonic gyrations of Total Shutdown's noise jazz, but mainly, its fractured rhythms and seeming disregard for genre inspire more convincing comparisons to Deceit-era This Heat, Saccharine Trust's mutant jazz and DNA's more lucid moments. This is especially true on 2011's We Were Wyoming, on which the band blends angular post-punk rhythms with demented, raging vocals and evolving repetition. Touring in support of its full-length album, Void, Garrincha conveys a sense of weirdness with a purpose.
