Techno has experienced a fantastic resurgence in the past few years, with new movements within the genre and new artists pushing the previously neglected style to the forefront of the dance-music world. At the vanguard of that movement is Gui Boratto, a Brazilian-born superstar, who's making techno history and changing the rules of the game with his expressive, articulate masterpieces and approach to the form. Boratto refuses to be a DJ, concentrating all of his energy on his own work. His productions are intricate, intense slices of electronic funk that range from minimal, hiccupping drum-machine workouts that sound just a step removed from the work of Plastikman, to gorgeous, lush synth-pop built on a base of deepest techno. When he plays out, he leaves the records at home, instead reshaping his own music into new forms in real time, and you can see him do just that this Saturday, April 11, at Beta.
