Trump Mother Jones
, Friday, November 5, and Saturday, November 6, at the Soiled Dove, is a seven-man band whose players dedicate their skills as studied musicians to pure, unapologetic funk. Five of the seven are graduates of various Colorado music programs, while lead vocalist/percussionist Jeff Cook draws lyrical inspiration from his days as a scholar of poetry. A groovy amalgamation of conventional funk instrumentation as well as hand drums and a brass section, Trump Mother Jones isn’t too concerned with art rock or angst. Rather, it’s a good-timey, good-vibey band as likely to bust tunes by Maceo or Stevie as originals like “I Wish I Had Fabio’s Pecs” and “Frankenbeans.” Innovators they ain’t, but Trump Mother Jones should appeal to those who just want to tear the roof off. Burlap to Cashmere is also on the bill. — Laura Bond
