There is something admirable about the desire of the twee torch-bearers in Los Campesinos! to keep trudging along, even after honesty in lyrics has fallen by the wayside. But primary songwriter and bandleader Gareth Campesinos! and his brood of BFFs revel in making the most of a bloody heart-on-sleeve approach, and it works. The Cardiff, Wales-formed septet has been recording manic and cute recordings since 2006. Last year's Hello Sadness revealed a darker side of the big band's chorus of voices and sounds, but the Campesinos! clan still sticks to its wired and self-deprecating delivery. Death and heartbreak are overwhelming themes in a post-teenage Campesinos! world, coming through with a mature precision via the group's jittery live shows.
