If you've already got your ticket to see Sound Tribe Sector 9 at Red Rocks this Saturday, September 10, you might want to get there early to catch the opener, too. LTJ Bukem is an intelligent-drum-and-bass god in the U.K., and for good reason. Bukem (aka Danny Williamson) is a classically trained pianist who was once part of a jazz-funk band, and that should come as no surprise to anyone who knows anything about this prolific DJ/producer. His smooth sounds pull from early techno, ambient, soul and jazz, blending and fusing into ethereal tunes that completely turn the popular idea of what drum-and-bass should sound like on its head. Bukem pioneered the atmospheric/intelligent drum-and-bass sound, so pretty much everything released under that designation has been influenced by LTJ himself. His Progression Sessions have taken him all around the globe, and after he opens for STS9, those guys are going to have a tough time following his soaring, staccato drums and sultry, insistent bass lines.
