M.A.N.D.Y. at Beta

M.A.N.D.Y. is the somewhat unwieldy name (what's with all the periods, guys?) of DJ/production duo Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung. These German dance mavens are close friends and frequent collaborators with Booka Shade, an act with a similar sound: bright, perky, techno-inflected house workouts with a tendency to incorporate strange and startling sounds into the mix. Little squiggles of electro, chunks of austere techno, touches of the hot minimal sound and nods to classic house and disco are all found in the records that Bodmer and Jung produce, remix or promote on their label, Get Physical. Those same elements play a part in their DJ style, most recently showcased on their entry in the Fabric series, an adventurous and intelligent compilation that never sacrifices the dance-floor imperative for the sake of being clever. Whether making records or mixing them, the two have a good ear for what works on the dance floor and off of it, as well as a knack for crafting tracks that work at home almost as well as they do in a club — a skill that could make M.A.N.D.Y. (due at Beta on Thursday, October 16) a crossover success.
