Forrest Avery LeMaire, better known as the Texas synth-pop musician Mr.Kitty, has canceled his headlining show in Denver that was due to take place at the Bluebird Theater on March 20. He made the announcement on February 10 via Facebook, citing the reason as "unforeseen circumstances."
The singer-songwriter, producer and DJ rose to prominence in 2019 following the viral success of his song "After Dark," which was recorded five years earlier. But he faced backlash in 2021 when the Austin Chronicle reported on his online sexual abuse of a fifteen year old while LeMaire was 29. According to the Chronicle, LeMaire sent numerous explicit messages as well as nude photos and videos to the victim; he solicited the same in return. Throughout much of the abuse, LeMaire was aware of the victim's age.
Just prior to the story's publication, LeMaire issued a statement on social media (it has since been deleted but remains in the Chronicle's article) admitting the "explicit" nature of his exchanges and the fact that he "ruined a minor's life." He was immediately dropped by the record label Negative Gain and he soon began canceling tour dates and festival appearances. His last live performance in Denver was on September 20, 2019, at 3 Kings Tavern (now HQ).
LeMaire's Denver concert planned for March 20 was announced on January 27 along with two other dates: February 28 in Houston and March 14 in Los Angeles. Those shows have not been canceled. Numerous promotional posts about the Denver show, including some made by the Bluebird, have been removed from social media following calls for a boycott because of LeMaire's sexual abuse. Tickets to the March 20 show at the Bluebird are fully refundable.
