Boyd Rice is Denver’s darkest iconoclast: A Web site devoted to his twisted oeuvre wasn’t named www.longlivedeath.com at random. Yet his twelfth disc for Mute (most issued under the aforementioned Non de plume) is fairly accessible, by his standards. The seven works here consist mainly of industrial drones, and while the results can be chilly — “Serpent of the Heavens” sounds like an air conditioner that wants to kill you — they often attain an oddly disturbing beauty. As a bonus, the package includes a second disc featuring the same material recorded in the DVD 5.1 “surround sound” format. When this audio-only platter is heard on the proper equipment, listeners won’t be able to escape Rice’s Children.
