Aggro-prog noiseniks with an ear for pop music, the three members of Parts & Labor churn out a melodic but confrontational sound characterized by electronic tinkering, smothering guitar distortion and flurries of pummelling percussion. But the Brooklyn-based outfit isn’t averse to using the droning skirl of a bagpipe to get its point across, either. Touring in support of its latest effort, Stay Afraid, on the Jagjaguwar/Brah imprint, Parts & Labor doesn’t induce shivers so much as evoke the adventurous aspects of Japan’s Boredoms and industrial Kraut legends Can, whose Damo Suzuki can be counted among the band’s many contributors. More often compared to Lightning Bolt or Single Frame, the mostly instrumental Parts & Labor maintains a rhythmic sharpness and an experimental flair that have garnered attention throughout the Big Apple’s underground. (Guitarist Dan Freil and bassist BJ Warshaw met while working at the prestigious Knitting Factory.) This Wednesday’s supporting slot with Wilderness promises an analog feast of delay pedals, oscillators, broken toys and punk-rock attitude. Even Mr. Goodwrench couldn’t ask for more.
