“Your spine is curving like a question mark,” belts out Christopher Richards somewhere in the middle of Power, the new full-length from Washington, D.C.’s agit-disco trio, Q and Not U. Like all the band’s lyrics, the above line is as cryptic as the Sphinx. But it could very well refer to the evolutionary ascent of the group itself — from the gnarled, hunchback post-punk of 2000’s No Kill No Beep Beep and the transitional beats of 2002’s Different Damage on through to Power‘s fully erect and unavoidably danceable take on sharp, cubist pop. Punk plus boogie isn’t a gimmick to Q and Not U: It’s a mission, a means of revolution by which riddles, rhythms and slithery melodies have the strength to open minds, connect hearts and kick certain dicks out of oval-shaped offices. The rebel-rousing threesome will be burning down the house this Saturday with fellow Dischord Records act El Guapo and hometown floor-filler the Hot House. Get on down, and let your ass unlock the door to Q and Not U’s deep, irresistible secrets.
